Changing with the seasons - The Lesley Arkin Optometrist guide to what's in vogue this season.
Where clothes seem to change dramatically from season to season, spectacles are slower to react to fashion changes. However, they do change, and the following will give you an idea about the latest styles.
Rimless frames in all shapes and forms remain very much of the moment. New styles with wider sides, such as those found in the latest Lindberg Spirit Titanium range, are popular for both men and women as they're very light and comfortable and they offer a variety of shapes and colours that look great. Also, rimless shapes are often ideal for new-generation varifocal lenses, as they offer an unobstructed field of vision.
Semi-rimless frames ('supras') have also been re-invented and feature in most brands. You'll find semi-rimless in trendy shapes and high-tech materials - and they're often excellent shapes for all lenses including varifocals.
Rectangular shapes are very popular and, after a long period of spectacles getting smaller and smaller, they now seem to be increasing in size.
For the young and trendy shallow rectangular shapes are very popular. These are also terrific shapes for reading glasses as, being narrow, you can peep over the top.
If you have a higher prescription, the increasingly popular acetate frames can be good at concealing the thickness of the lenses.
The new season
Beautiful models with heavier sides in wonderful vibrant colours and patterns are beginning to dominate the market for all ages, although rimless in new colours and innovative sides are still holding their own.
